A detective investigates a series of crimes in a small village in 1938 in South Ostrobothnia.
The story is sentimental historical fiction. At first I thought it’s going to be like Tommi Kinnunen’s books but it does have more complex structure. There’s an unreliable narrator and everything!
The characters are likeable but not lifelike. The biggest problem is the protagonist Vilja. She has been traumatized and has lost her mind. It defines her whole character, but I can’t help thinking that the way it’s described in the book is not how mental illnesses work. You’d expect more from a realistic book like this.
