A picaresque.
In the 16th century, King John III of Portugal gifts an elephant to the archduke of Austria, and the book follows the journey of the gift elephant and its keeper through Europe from Lisbon to Wien.
Based on historical events, but made-up and funny. Reminded me of Calvino and Pynchon (even though the book is not playing games with the reader) so was suprised it was first published in 2008.
